Dave Simmons takes on new role

Columbia, MD – March 19, 2024 – The Merriweather Arts and Culture Center (MACC) is delighted to announce its new role in the much-loved Lakefest this summer on behalf of the Columbia Festival of the Arts (CFA). In a new strategic partnership between the organizations, MACC will assume operational and programming oversight of the three-day festival at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront. Scheduled for June 14-16, Lakefest will celebrate its 37th year with a spectacular lineup of homegrown, national, and international acts, and juried-invitational-only exhibits from over 50 renowned regional artists.

More than 25,000 people enjoy Lakefest each year, supported by more than 300 local volunteers. The full Lakefest lineup of artists will be released on April 16th.

In addition, MACC is thrilled to welcome Dave Simmons as our new Director of Programming. With over a decade of experience, Dave brings a wealth of fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. He has a proven record of producing visionary programs, including Lakefest, and other immersive experiences around the region. In his new role at MACC, Dave will apply his unique programming skills to the Merriweather District, Merriweather Post Pavilion, Color Burst Park, the Lakefront, and beyond. Dave is married with two children, who provide him with a constant stream of feedback and inspiration for new programming ideas.

Candace Dodson Reed, Chair of the MACC Board of Directors says, “MACC and the CFA have enjoyed a strong working relationship for the past several years, and we’re excited about expanding this partnership to help bolster one of Columbia's summer traditions, Lakefest. The partnership highlights our commitment to presenting diverse, talented, and professional artists from throughout the region and nation, and to growing a thriving cultural ecosystem in Columbia. I also want to share how thrilled we are to have Dave Simmons join MACC. With his collaborative spirit and strong artistic sense, Dave is an integral and invaluable member of our team and our arts community.”

Phil Maher, Chair of the CFA’s Board of Trustees, says, “we are excited to continue expanding our partnership with MACC, and together we will continue delivering our mission of bringing world class arts, culture, and entertainment to the community.”

Following its most successful year, MACC is rolling out a robust slate of programming for 2024. The season opener is April 21, when Tank and the Bangas take the Merriweather stage with the Howard County Youth Orchestra.
